Trusting in Christ and not in myself

A week ago or so, I decided it would be a good idea to memorise a psalm that I might be able to use to minister to people in a crisis. There are some wonderful words written by King David in Psalm 62:

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my deliverance and my honour;
my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.

Psalm 62.5-8 (NRSV)

In God's wonderful timing, the first person that I ministered to with the passage was myself!
There are so many things we are tempted to take refuge in, to find comfort and security. Money, possessions, career, a particular talent or relationship. But this psalm is a trumpet call to find our comfort and security in none of those things, but in God alone.
He alone is my rock and my salvation...

I was talking to a woman the other day who has suffered from depression and sometimes thinks that she's ugly. The world's response would be "you're not ugly, you're beautiful." It seems King David's response to that woman would be, "Don't trust in your appearance! Trust God at all times."
Even if that woman were a supermodel, surely David's response is better than convincing her that she is beautiful. What if she had a car accident and lost her looks? What about as her looks deteriorate as she get older? Our outer nature (along with everything else in this world) is wasting away (2 Cor 4:16) but Jesus is our mighty rock. If we take refuge in him, we will never be shaken.
What about me? Will I put my trust in Jesus alone and take shelter in him against the assaults of day-to-day life: the disappointments, the loneliness, my own failings?
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.
If I've got any sense at all, the answer must be "yes!" I must seek refuge in God and in nothing else.
